Non-polluting and quiet, today's battery powered electric scooters are capable of giving their gas guzzling cousins a ride for the money. With ratings as high as an incredible 5000 watts of power, these eco-friendly street scooters are street legal and often classified as motorcycles with all DMV motorcycle rules and regulations applicable. With the recent advent of the even greener lithium-ion battery system, these electric scooters are even lighter, faster and quicker to take a recharge.

This new technology does come at a price. In general, an electric scooter may be initially more expensive than a gas powered version of similar capabilities. Like all electric vehicles, electric street scooter performance is determined by speed, rider weight and length of operating time. "Real world" performance is often lower than manufacturers' specifications would indicate. But perhaps the biggest drawback of the electric scooter is the necessary recharging cycle. Instead of a few minutes at the gas pump, every electric scooter requires hours of recharging after every ride. Although perfect perhaps for the predictable schedule of the urban commuter, the electric street scooter -- even the newer lithium-ion models -- cannot offer the 24-hour dependability of the older gasoline engine motor scooter.
